29 Days to Diva: Day 25 — Set Specific Goals (#29daystodiva)

February 25, 2012 By sybariticsinger Leave a Comment

The most important thing about having goals is to have them. I do not care how you keep track of them or what you think is standing in your way. You have aspirations. However, if you do not write your goals – they are just wishes. Simple daydreams are convenient when you are bored on the subway or standing in line. A dream becomes a goal when you apply action.
Therefore, your day 25 (can you believe we’re already at day 25?) challenge is to set and work towards specific goals.

Specific goals? Why can’t I just say “I want to be an opera singer”? Two reasons: You already are an opera singer. The difference is how actively you are being an opera singer. Second, specific goals help you break down the big challenge into smaller, more easily achieved challenges. “Tasks must be specific (i.e. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on your part).”¹

One of the goal-setting sites that I really like to use is the Day Zero Project: 101 Goals in 1001 Days. “The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organizing and timing some tasks such as overseas trips, study semesters, or outdoor activities.”¹ Many people create lists of resolutions at the beginning of every year. There are all sorts of crumpled up “bucket lists” hidden at the bottom of drawers and stuffed into journals. Think of this type of goal setting as more like creating a path to your larger goals.

The top ten goals on that site are

1. Donate blood
2. Write a letter to myself to open in 10 years
3. Sleep under the stars
4. Get a tattoo
5. Leave an inspirational note inside a book for someone to find
6. Kiss in the rain
7. Don’t complain about anything for a week
8. Answer the “50 Questions That Will Free Your Mind”
9. Fall in love
10. Get a job

Here’s the thing: I am all for sleeping under the stars and falling in love. But, I want something more than that – and I think you do too. I think you want to start a legacy project. A legacy doesn’t happen without some specific goals and it probably ain’t gonna happen by kissing in the rain, either. Sorry to burst your bubble. Think of this 29 days to diva (#29daystodiva) as a starting point for your own goals. Think about your diva strengths and weaknesses and what you can add to (and excise from) your life.

Do more than dream about your life – do work, my little divas, do work.
